None of the local aviation companies were able to travel for a rescue in the dark and the canoeist’s last known location was not easily accessible by land or water. An officer in charge of the search-and-rescue contacted the Trenton, Ont.-based Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC), which advised RCMP that a Phoenix Heli-Flight medevac helicopter out of Fort McMurray could be used. The helicopter landed in Stony Rapids around 10:30 p.m. to refuel and then travel to the last known location of the 26 year old.

When the search team located the man, there was no suitable spot for a landing so a paramedic was lowered to the ground to stabilize the 26 year old. As the helicopter hovered above, the man and his dog were extracted just before midnight. The man was taken to hospital and is expected to fully recovery from his injuries.

Black Lake is located in the boreal forest approximately 1,025 kilometres north of Saskatoon.
