We feel strongly that a project as large and expensive as the proposed new downtown library should be decided by the public in a referendum included in the upcoming fall election. It is obvious that the current Frances Morrison Library is more than adequate for the small number of residents who live downtown and that it would make more sense to add smaller libraries in newer, larger neighbourhoods at much less cost. Book transfers from branch to branch could continue just as they operate now.

Having such a major project arbitrarily decided by our mayor and city counsellors is not good enough; let the public decide about spending that amount of our money, especially in these times.

Premier did not meet with Durocher

As a Metis person, I find it offensive that Premier Moe only sent his ministers to talk with Tristen Durocher. I am disappointed that he did not bother to go and meet this young man who is flagging a worthy cause and acting in a peaceful, respectful way.

I do understand that the premier would not want to encourage teepee-building on the legislature lawn. However, a mediating gesture, perhaps of meeting in a different location, would not have been difficult. Good will goes a long way and there was no good will extended to Tristen during his 44-day quest. Tristen really left empty-handed, with a confirmation that Regina is a long way from the North and that Premier Moe is untouched and uncaring about the great distress of suicide in the North.
