Saskatoon police have charged a 39-year-old man in connection with a Sept. 11 apartment building fire.

The man, who was arrested on Thursday, is charged with arson having disregard for human life and a breach of court-imposed conditions.

No one was injured in the Sept. 11 fire, which caused $200,000 in damages to an apartment building in the 2000 block of 20th Street West.

Firefighters responded to several 911 calls reporting a possible structure fire in the building with multiple people still inside. Upon arrival they saw a building occupant requiring rescue from a third-level window and helped the person to safety, according to a fire department media release.

Most other residents self-evacuated from the burning building. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes of arrival.

The building was closed due to extensive fire damage and the Canadian Red Cross helped six occupants from four units, the release stated.

The accused man is next expected to appear in Saskatoon provincial court on Sept. 22. His name was not released.
