tny.im is yet another URL shortener. As Wikipedia says:
URL shortening is a technique on the World Wide Web in which a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) may be made substantially shorter in length and still direct to the required page. This is achieved by using an HTTP Redirect on a domain name that is short, which links to the web page that has a long URL.
This means tny.im is a tool that lets you create a short URL that redirects to another one, usually a longer one. The short URL can then be used where text length is severely restricted. Short URLs can also often be nicer when put in the middle of other text (they don't break the text flow because they are small), and don't suffer from line breaking problems. Additionally, they are easier to transmit in handwriting and in speech.
tny.im is a bit different from a traditional URL shortener, in the sense that in addition to long URLs, it can also create short URLs for other things, such as email addresses. At the system core, these are recorded as long URLs.
This URL shortener was originally running on a non-profit business model. We accept donations. Because this service takes effort and money to keep running, and because the donations are rare, we were forced into including advertisements in our service. These are (hopefully) non-intrusive, and are on the footer of every page on this website. The ads are served by a trusted provider and can only contain text or images (no Java or Flash).
As far as we're reponsible, tny.im will always be free to use in terms of shortening and clicking on regular short links. Because we don't like websites with too many advertisements or that require you to prove you're not a robot on every step, we are commited to keeping the ads as few and less intrusive as possible, and to only use captchas when there is no other option to stop spam.
We had to move our service into another domain name for two times already (know why). The domain tny.im has been in use for over a year and we will certainly keep using it for some more years. We work to have the best uptime possible so your short URLs always work.
tny.im was created by the guy known on the internet as gbl08ma. He has a blog and a Twitter account.
gbl08ma and some friends founded the TNY network. You can check the website of this network for updates on this shortener and on other projects.
